Screening & Extraction Help

Ongoing
Evidentia Institute of Knowledge Synthesis (Institut Evidentia de Synthèse des Connaissances) is a Canadian federal non-profit research organization dedicated to address complex societal challenges and drive impactful change through interdisciplinary research collaborations. We specialize in performing rigorous statistical review projects, utilizing comprehensive methodologies to analyze and synthesize existing research to uncover evidence-based solutions that address pressing issues.

You will be involved in a systematic review, which involves a structured and comprehensive approach to synthesizing research evidence on a specific topic.

The role of a screener in a systematic review is to evaluate studies for inclusion based on predefined criteria. Screeners review titles, abstracts, and full texts to determine whether studies meet the eligibility requirements, such as relevance to the research question, study design, and quality. This process typically involves two levels of screening: initial screening for relevance and secondary screening for detailed eligibility. Screeners must ensure that their assessments are consistent and unbiased, often using software or tools to facilitate the process.

Initial Screening: Screeners assess titles and abstracts of studies identified through literature searches to determine if they meet the inclusion criteria.

Full-Text Review: For studies that pass the initial screening, screeners read the full texts to confirm eligibility and ensure they meet the criteria set for the systematic review.

Documentation: They meticulously document their decisions and any reasons for exclusion, which is important for transparency and reproducibility.

Consensus and Discrepancy Resolution: If multiple screeners are involved, they may discuss and resolve any discrepancies in their decisions to ensure consistency.

Quality Assessment: While the primary focus is on inclusion, screeners may also assess the quality and risk of bias of the studies during the review process.

Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
At Evidentia, we follow the ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) recommendations for authorship, ensuring that all contributors meet established criteria. Volunteers may have the opportunity to be co-authors on publications, which provides valuable experience in academic writing and research dissemination.
