Academic Tutor

Academic Tutors provide Ching Tien Foundation Master’s Program Scholarship recipients
(“Scholars”) with crucial support as they navigate the challenges of fulfilling the requirements of our scholarship programs while adapting to student-life in a global setting. For Scholars who are new to the local academic culture and do not have a native-level command of the English language, this support is invaluable. 

Academic Tutors help Scholars acclimatize to the local academic culture and expectations. They provide regular support that can include being a sounding board to talk through academic assignments, offering subject-related tutelage or advice, and proofreading and providing feedback on scholarly assignments. 

Academic Tutorss support the Ching Tien Foundation on a volunteer basis for a period of one year of service. 

Academic Tutors Responsibilities
• Commit to meeting with a Scholar four to eight hours / month via virtual meetings over
one academic year of the Scholar’s study program.
• Help the Scholar gain a clear understanding of the academic expectations of her field of
study and program including but not limited to academic ethics, research guidelines,
institutional / graduate school culture and expectations.
• Encourage and nurture critical thinking, creativity, and independence.
• Provide a safe space for brainstorming and/or sounding board support to help the
Scholar talk out academic concepts and ideas related to her study program.
• Provide proofreading and constructive feedback to help the Scholar improve her
academic English abilities, and to encourage adherence to academic guidelines and
expectations.
• Recommend learning resources, activities, or strategies to help the Scholar achieve her
goals.
• Provide the Foundation Leadership with regular updates to confirm that Advisor
commitment is in progress.
• If the Academic Tutor cannot fulfill the commitment, he/she must notify the
Foundation. The Foundation requires 30 day’s notice if the Tutor wants to terminate the
commitment.
• Foundation will provide a letter of gratitude to recognize the Tutors contribution to the
program and number of service hours.
Certification or Education Required
• Professional teacher, professor or educator, active or retired.
• Professionally certified with a teaching degree.
• Minimum 10 years teaching experience.
• Experience with master’s degree students is an asset.
• Experience with ESL students is an asset.
• Sincere interest and passion to help a Ching Tien Foundation Scholar succeed in her study path.
