The Organization - Pacific Legal Education and Outreach Society (PLEO)
The Pacific Legal Education & Outreach Society (PLEO) has been providing legal education and information to the non-profit sector through our Law for Non Profits project since 2005. We strive to empower Canadian non-profits to access justice efficiently, effectively and equitably through virtual and in-person legal clinics, online events and the creation and dissemination of accessible tools needed to prevent a legal crisis in their day-to-day operations. Our LawForNonProfits.ca platform, launched in 2024, is a free, low-barrier series of Legal Help Guides that helps organizations build confidence and capacity, empowering them to strengthen their own procedural and legal/policy systems.

Organization Mission
PLEO’s mission is to empower non-profits in Canada to access justice efficiently, effectively and equitably. With this purpose, we aim to shift the paradigm in how non-profits experience the law, providing them with tools, education, and information needed to prevent a legal issue before it happens.

Project Summary
PLEO has developed and offers free legal tools & resources to empower non-profit leaders. Law for Non-Profits (LFNP) is a free self-serve resource from Pacific Legal Education & Outreach Society (PLEO) designed to help organizations avoid common legal issues and focus on what they do best. The step-by-step Legal Help Guides walk you through a series of plain language questions to see if your organization has any areas to address. Once you complete a guide, you’ll be provided with a checklist, sample documents, and helpful resources to keep your organization in good legal standing.
This service has been developed specifically for BC non-profit organizations. PLEO has been funded to enable it to lay the foundation for scaling the platform across Canada. It has already started working with Yukon, Alberta and Nunavut. Each province and/or territory will need support both in the revision of content to reflect local law, and access funding sources. Each non profit network and local public legal education and information provider will have to work collaboratively for this to work. Keeping track of all the moving parts has proven challenging - we need to build a roadmap that will guide anyone working on the project. We are a small team and need to work efficiently to ensure success.
This is a major undertaking and PLEO is looking for project management support to guide the organization on the most effective path to achieving this objective.
